The Dalai Lama XIV said the following:
Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
I look at a lot of friends and family who have been together for a period of time, where their existence is based on the requirements that they are together, love has long left the relationships on that ever so special level, and people merely use each other to get through life as painlessly as possible.
This is all well and good if it serves the purpose of existing, and that is your life goal, but surely, by staying with someone for the need of it rather than the love, then you leave yourself open to having other areas of your life exploited. You will close doors that would be open to you if you wasn't so willing to simply get by and not take risks.
Often excuses such as "Not at my age", "I wouldn't know what to do if my routine got mucked up", "I like it at this pace" are said. These I hear over and over again, people make a shut away situation for themselves. I say avoid this, sure, take on any activities you have to get to the end you require, but always keep in mind thre has to be an end result for everything you are doing, never let a day slip by.
I will leave you with these words from Buddha
